After days of significant activity, the Hayli Gubbi volcano in northern Ethiopia, previously thought to be dormant, has slowed but still poses challenges. The eruption has severely impacted the nearby villages in the Afdera district, where volcanic ash has blanketed the area, causing health issues for residents and affecting local livestock.
Many residents are experiencing respiratory problems due to the ash emissions, while livestock is suffering from depleted grazing and watering resources. Mobile medical teams have been dispatched to the most affected areas, including Fia and Nemma-Gubi, to provide vital health services.
The ash cloud has spread rapidly, propelled by strong winds, traversing the Red Sea and extending over Yemen, Oman, and the Arabian Sea before reaching western and northern India. This resulted in the cancellation and delay of numerous international flights, particularly those operated by India’s Air India and Akasa Air to destinations across the Middle East, including Jeddah, Kuwait, and Abu Dhabi.
New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport reported that at least seven international flights were canceled, with a number of others delayed due to safety measures regarding the ash cloud. Aviation authorities mandated thorough inspections for aircraft that operated in or over the impacted zones.
Experts have pointed out that Ethiopia sits on an active tectonic rift, making volcanic eruptions and seismic activity a common occurrence. Geologists note that this marks the first eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in the last 10,000 years, with expectations of continued activity followed by a return to stability.
According to Indian meteorological services, the ash cloud is shifting further eastward towards China and is anticipated to disperse from Indian airspace by late Tuesday, allowing for the resumption of normal conditions.
This eruption underscores the serious risks for communities residing near active geological zones and the extensive effects such natural phenomena can have, from international flight interruptions to significant health concerns for local populations.
