Tensions Escalate as US B-52 Bombers Approach Venezuela's Coast

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a show of military force, two US B-52 bombers were seen flying close to the Venezuelan coastline over the Caribbean Sea on Thursday, as the US intensifies its efforts against suspected drug trafficking in the area.

Flight tracking data from Flightradar24 indicated that the bombers navigated parallel to the northern coast of Venezuela, circled near Caracas, then returned northward across the sea. This incident marks at least the fourth occurrence of US military aircraft flying near Venezuela since mid-October, including previous appearances by both B-52 and B-1B bombers.

The recent operation raises alarms in Caracas, where officials suspect that the US military presence in the Caribbean may reflect deeper political intentions. While Washington claims its operations are designed solely to disrupt international drug trafficking routes, Venezuelan authorities have accused the US of leveraging anti-drug efforts as a guise for regime change.

Over the past few weeks, the US has bolstered its naval and air capabilities in the region. The USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier strike group has been dispatched to Latin America, complemented by stationed F-35 stealth fighters in Puerto Rico and six naval vessels currently active in the Caribbean Sea.

Since early September, US forces have executed at least 17 strikes on vessels alleged to be involved in drug smuggling—16 boats and one semi-submersible—resulting in approximately 67 fatalities, according to official reports. However, US authorities have yet to provide definitive evidence that these vessels were involved in narcotics trafficking or posed an immediate risk.

The ongoing presence of substantial US military forces near Venezuelan waters has significantly escalated geopolitical tensions. President Nicolás Maduro's government accuses the US of plotting to destabilize his administration, while Washington maintains its operations are focused on "counter-narcotics efforts."

As each flight and naval action occurs, the standoff between Washington and Caracas deepens—transforming the Caribbean skies into a central flashpoint in the escalating regional power struggle.
