Egypt's coach Helmi Toulan is eager for the Pharaohs to excel in the FIFA Arab Cup Qatar 2025. The team will commence their Group C journey against Kuwait today at Lusail Stadium, joined by Jordan and the UAE in the group. This marks Egypt’s sixth tournament appearance, with a past victory in 1992 and semi-final finishes twice, including during the last tournament in 2021 in Qatar.
The squad will be without notable players, including Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush, who are preoccupied with their English clubs, Liverpool and Manchester City, while the senior setup gears up for the Africa Cup of Nations, commencing December 21 in Morocco. Despite these absences, Toulan is optimistic about his team’s mix of youth and experience.
Toulan shared, “I’ve been appointed as coach for a limited time. Our preparatory phase has been promising, having played friendly matches against Tunisia, Morocco, and Algeria to evaluate our squad and forge a robust blend of youth and seasoned players. My targets are ambitious, and I’m confident our players will deliver in the tournament.”
He also praised the fervent support from fans in Doha and Egypt, which he believes will significantly motivate the team. The Pharaohs are committed to making a statement in the Arab Cup, demonstrating the strength of Egyptian football despite the absence of their star players.
Kuwait arrives at the tournament on a high note after a 2-0 victory over Mauritania in the qualifiers held at Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium. This marks Kuwait’s ninth appearance, with aspirations for their first title under the guidance of Portuguese coach Hélio Sousa. Sousa is focusing on long-term team growth and securing a win in their first match.
Sousa stated, “Since last September, we have played six friendly matches to build a cohesive unit that can maintain performance levels. Facing a formidable opponent like Egypt, our objective is to win while laying the groundwork for future success.”
The two teams have clashed twice in the Arab Cup previously, with Egypt taking the win 1-0 in 1992 and Kuwait triumphing 4-1 in 1998. With a considerable crowd anticipated at the iconic Lusail Stadium, both teams are eager to enhance their records and make a strong impact in the tournament’s initial phase.
Egypt aspires to utilize this tournament as an opportunity to evaluate emerging talent and build competitive momentum ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. Conversely, Kuwait aims to foster team unity and achieve its maiden Arab Cup victory. The matchup promises to be a thrilling contest, highlighting the rising standards of football in the Arab world.
