Tragic Death of Ecuadorian Footballer Mario Pineida in Guayaquil Shooting

Post by : Mara Rahim

Authorities in Ecuador reported that Mario Pineida, a 33-year-old defender for Barcelona de Guayaquil, was tragically shot dead on December 17, 2025, in Guayaquil. The incident also resulted in the death of another individual, with a third sustaining injuries. The Interior Ministry acknowledged Pineida's death without disclosing further specifics about the incident. Barcelona de Guayaquil released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over the passing of their football star.

Having started his professional journey at Independiente del Valle from 2010 until 2015, Pineida transferred to Barcelona de Guayaquil in 2016, securing two league titles. In 2022, he briefly played for Brazil’s Fluminense. Reports indicate that the shooting occurred in the Samanes neighborhood of northern Guayaquil, approximately 265 kilometers southwest of Quito, the capital.

Ecuador is grappling with an alarming surge in violence, with projections indicating over 9,000 homicides anticipated for this year. The previous year recorded 7,063 violent deaths while 2023 saw 8,248. President Daniel Noboa has pledged to combat the criminal enterprises connected to international drug cartels operating within the nation.

This incident marks yet another violent episode in Guayaquil involving football players. In November, a young player from Independiente del Valle lost his life due to a stray bullet. Previously, Maicol Valencia, Leandro Yépez, and Jonathan González have also succumbed to gunshot wounds. These tragedies emphasize the urgent need for enhanced safety measures for both citizens and athletes in Ecuador as security challenges grow.
