Abhimanyu Easwaran’s career trajectory continues to baffle enthusiasts of Indian cricket. The Bengal opener is renowned for his consistent displays in domestic red-ball cricket, yet he remains without a Test cap. Although he has frequently made it to India’s squad, his name rarely appears in the playing XI, as various team managements prefer other options at every opportunity.
At 30, Easwaran has an impressive first-class record, having scored 8,136 runs in 109 matches at an average of 47.85—a tally that typically warrants a longer look for Test selection. However, his absence in IPL teams and limited participation in white-ball formats have led many to think he doesn't align with the current trend favoring multi-format players.
That perception might be changing. During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Punjab, Easwaran showcased his potential by scoring a stunning 130 off just 66 balls, clearly signaling his desire to enhance his white-ball resume. While this performance didn’t lead Bengal to victory, it definitely captured national attention.
Ravichandran Ashwin remarked on his YouTube channel, making a light-hearted jab at chief selector Ajit Agarkar and head coach Gautam Gambhir. Commenting on Easwaran’s T20 century, Ashwin quipped:
“Now that Abhimanyu has scored a hundred in T20 as well, we’ll definitely get to see him. Since he’s made runs in T20, surely he’ll make the Test team now.”
This remark taps into a growing frustration among fans and former players who feel Easwaran should have received an opportunity following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. Instead, the selection committee opted for younger talents like Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, neither of whom have significantly impressed against England.
Easwaran has faced criticism over his performances in India A matches, viewed as a key pathway to joining the national team. Earlier this year, he candidly expressed the emotional strain of awaiting a break-through opportunity.
“Yes, it does hurt sometimes. You work hard, prepare well, and the dream is always to be in the middle contributing to the team,” he told Revsportz in October. “But I’m fortunate to have a strong support system—family, friends, coaches—who keep me grounded. I’m in a good space now and looking forward to the Ranji season.”
With his performances across formats gaining recognition and senior roles opening up, there is hope that Easwaran’s perseverance will pay off. For now, his narrative remains one of domestic brilliance, still waiting for its international debut.
