European Visitor Penalized AED 15,000 for Necklace Theft in Dubai

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

A tourist from Europe has been penalized AED 15,000 for her involvement in a gold necklace theft at a Dubai jewellery store. This incident has sparked discussions on retail security and the rigorous enforcement of theft regulations within the emirate.

The theft took place in March 2025 when the suspect reportedly concealed a gold necklace valued at AED 10,000 in her handbag before exiting the store. Staff quickly realized the item was missing and initiated a review of their CCTV footage, which revealed the act of theft.

Dubai Police were able to identify the woman through her vehicle registration and apprehended her shortly after. During questioning, she confessed to the crime, explaining that emotional difficulties stemming from her sister's passing had influenced her decision. Her lawyer sought leniency, drawing attention to her personal challenges.

Ultimately, the Dubai Misdemeanours and Violations Court determined that the evidence presented demonstrated her intent to commit theft. Consequently, she was fined AED 5,000 and required to pay an additional AED 10,000 in restitution to the jewellery store for the stolen item, leading to a total penalty of AED 15,000. The presiding judge emphasized that she was fully aware of her actions, despite her emotional distress.

This case highlights Dubai's unwavering stance on retail theft and the use of advanced surveillance and investigative measures to uphold accountability.
