Interim Bangladeshi chief Muhammad Yunus has triggered a diplomatic storm after presenting a map to Pakistani General Sahir Shamshad Mirza that portrays Assam and India’s northeastern states as part of Bangladesh. The image, widely shared online, has provoked sharp reactions in India and concern among regional analysts.
The episode occurred during General Mirza's visit to Dhaka, when Yunus gifted him a copy of the book Art of Triumph. Observers noted the book's cover depicted a reconfigured map resembling the notion of a 'Greater Bangladesh', an illustration that quickly circulated on social media and drew condemnation from commentators who called it a provocative political gesture.
This incident follows earlier remarks by Yunus during a trip to China, where he described Bangladesh as the 'only guardian of the ocean' for India’s landlocked northeastern states, suggesting those provinces could be linked to wider economic corridors through Bangladesh. Indian officials have expressed unease, interpreting such comments as challenging India's territorial integrity.
New Delhi has not issued a formal statement so far, but sources point to growing concern at the Ministry of External Affairs. Analysts note bilateral ties cooled after Yunus assumed interim leadership in 2024 following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government, ending a period of closer trade and transit cooperation with the previous administration.
Experts warn that promoting irredentist imagery risks destabilising an already sensitive regional balance. References to a 'Greater Bangladesh'—previously confined to fringe discourse—could alienate India and increase Dhaka's diplomatic isolation, potentially accelerating political alignment with Pakistan and China, some analysts say.
Calls for clarification and accountability have intensified, with Indian commentators urging an immediate explanation from Dhaka and a decisive diplomatic response from New Delhi. Social media reactions ranged from disbelief to accusations of deliberate provocation, with many branding the gesture an affront to India's sovereignty.
Whether the map was an inadvertent lapse or an intentional signal, the episode has widened the trust deficit between Bangladesh and India and added fresh uncertainty to South Asian geopolitics.
