New Delhi: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to Brussels on October 27–28 for talks with Maros Sefcovic, Executive Vice‑President and European Commissioner for Trade, as both sides seek to conclude a long‑standing Free Trade Agreement.
The trip arrives at a critical juncture after the 14th round of negotiations earlier this month. Officials say the meetings are intended to provide high‑level political direction and to hasten agreement on remaining technical and policy differences with a target for a year‑end outcome.
Negotiators have remained in Brussels beyond the formal round to tackle several contentious chapters, most notably rules of origin. The EU is pressing for tighter verification to limit the risk of third‑country goods entering its market via India, an issue of particular concern for sensitive lines such as agriculture, wines and spirits, and products protected by Geographical Indications.
Agriculture remains one of the thorniest files. India seeks mutual recognition of agricultural standards to avoid repeated testing and costly certification steps that delay exports, while the EU has stressed sanitary and phytosanitary safeguards.
The talks span 23 policy areas, ranging from market access and investment protection to government procurement and sustainable development, making this among India’s most wide‑ranging trade negotiations in recent years.
In the last financial year, bilateral goods trade between India and the EU was about $136.5 billion, with Indian exports of $75.8 billion and imports of $60.7 billion, underlining the bloc’s status as a major trading partner.
During his visit, Goyal is expected to review progress, try to clear outstanding obstacles and set a roadmap towards a final pact that could alter trade flows between India and Europe.
If concluded, the agreement would be a significant diplomatic and economic milestone, strengthening India’s role in global supply chains and deepening commercial ties with one of the world’s largest markets.
