East Timor Joins ASEAN as 11th Member, Strengthening Regional Ties

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

East Timor has formally been admitted as the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a milestone confirmed when accession instruments were signed at the opening session of the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur. Delegations from all member states and several visiting heads of state observed the ratification.

Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao described the accession as a "historic beginning" for the nation, underlining its potential to expand trade links, stimulate investment and support sustainable economic development. He said the membership affirms East Timor’s progress on the international stage.

Since achieving independence in 2002, East Timor has undertaken a sustained effort to meet ASEAN’s political, economic and security benchmarks. Full membership will integrate the country more closely into regional frameworks and grant it access to ASEAN programmes in areas such as education, infrastructure development and technology cooperation.

ASEAN leadership received East Timor’s accession positively, noting the broader strategic and economic implications for the bloc. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono characterised the move as the start of a deeper partnership and stressed the importance of coordinated support from member states to ensure East Timor’s effective integration.

Officials and analysts expect membership to accelerate foreign direct investment and bilateral trade, enhance diplomatic engagement, and provide East Timor with a platform to take part in shaping Southeast Asia’s future policy agenda.
