In a stunning performance, Luka Doncic lit up the scoreboard, netting 32 of his 49 points during the first half, propelling the Los Angeles Lakers to a decisive 128-110 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday. Doncic also recorded 11 rebounds and 8 assists, embodying the Lakers’ offensive might throughout the encounter.
Austin Reaves contributed significantly with 25 points and 11 assists, while Rui Hachimura added 23 points to the Lakers' success. Deandre Ayton pitched in with 15 points, supporting a well-rounded offensive strategy. The Lakers finished the game shooting an impressive 59.2%, far surpassing the Timberwolves’ 46.6% shooting percentage.
For the Timberwolves, Anthony Edwards was the standout performer with 31 points, while Julius Randle supplied 26 points and 9 rebounds. Minnesota struggled defensively, particularly in the second quarter, allowing the Lakers to shoot an exceptional 64.7% and entering the half with a dominant 32-point surge that solidified their control.
The first quarter was a scoring frenzy with both teams showing little defensive restraint, as the Timberwolves initially led 40-36, fueled by Edwards' 14 points. Doncic responded with 23 points in the first quarter, stepping up in LeBron James' absence as well as the sidelined Maxi Kleber and Jaxson Hayes due to injuries.
Los Angeles wrapped up the first half on a strong note with a 14-4 run, bringing the halftime score to 68-63 in their favor. The Lakers shot 60% in the first half while the Timberwolves managed 50%, giving the home side a solid upper hand.
In the third quarter, the Lakers extended their lead with a 9-4 run, eventually taking a 97-86 lead with a driving layup from Reaves. They successfully entered the final quarter with a 108-94 advantage, securing their lead over Minnesota.
With just over three minutes left on the clock, Doncic had a chance at a 50-point game but missed one of his two free throws, subsequently exiting the game. Nevertheless, his performance was the standout highlight, setting a confident tone for the team as the season unfolds.
The Lakers demonstrated exceptional offensive synergy, overcoming the absence of key players. Minnesota, now 1-1 on their season-opening road, looks to refine its strategies as they gear up to face the Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers at home on Sunday.
