A potentially tragic accident was averted on the Chandigarh–Manali highway when a driver was recorded appearing fast asleep while maintaining speeds close to 100 kmph.
This alarming incident was surfaced through a video captured by another traveler, which has rapidly gained traction across social media platforms. In it, a white sedan is shown weaving between lanes, with the driver slumped over in his seat, oblivious to both traffic and the conditions surrounding him.
Intervention from Bystanders
The footage depicts a truck driver alongside the sedan taking note of the situation and attempting to intervene. He can be heard blasting his air horn and shouting repeatedly to rouse the driver. However, despite the continued loud alerts, the driver remained unresponsive for several kilometers, his head tilted back as the car hurtled forward.
The event reportedly took place on a quieter section of the highway, which may have played a role in averting a severe accident.
Focus on Commercial Driving and Fatigue
The vehicle featured commercial registration plates; however, it remains unclear if the driver was operating a taxi or working with a transportation firm. Authorities have yet to provide details on how the car was ultimately brought to a stop.
Experts in road safety point to this footage as a reflection of the rising problem of driver fatigue, particularly among commercial drivers who endure long hours, tight deadlines, and minimal rest periods.
Addressing the 'Silent Killer' on Roads
“Drowsy driving poses dangers similar to driving under the influence,” stated a road safety consultant. “A moment of microsleep while traveling at high speeds can lead to catastrophic consequences.”
AdCalls for Tighter Regulations
While local law enforcement has not released an official comment yet, the incident has sparked intense discussions online, with many advocating for stricter regulations governing rest periods for commercial drivers to avert such close calls from becoming tragic outcomes.
This viral footage serves as a chilling reminder of the pressing need for better regulation, awareness, and enforcement to secure safer roads.
