Landon Donovan Challenges Australia Coach on World Cup Prospects

Landon Donovan Challenges Australia Coach on World Cup Prospects

Post by : Mara Rahim

Landon Donovan, the former captain of the United States soccer team, has voiced his skepticism regarding Australia coach Tony Popovic’s optimistic outlook on the 2026 World Cup draw. Donovan predicts an early exit for the Socceroos despite Popovic's confidence. The U.S. will co-host the tournament with Canada and Mexico and found themselves in Group D alongside Australia, Paraguay, and a playoff victor. Donovan pointed out the U.S.'s advantage, especially after Mauricio Pochettino’s squad recently triumphed over both Paraguay and Australia.

Following the draw, Popovic expressed enthusiasm regarding his team, stating the players are eager for the challenge ahead. However, Donovan, in conversation with former U.S. internationals Cobi Jones and Brad Guzan on a FOX Soccer podcast, critiqued Popovic’s rather “smug” demeanor. He noted that coaches typically exhibit a cautious tone in their remarks, yet Popovic appeared delightfully self-assured.

While acknowledging Australia's strength as a formidable opponent, Donovan confidently asserted that the U.S. should secure a victory. He humorously advised Popovic to “get back on the Qantas airplane” post-tournament, expressing his strong belief that the U.S. will surpass Australia.

In discussing group predictions, Donovan and his co-hosts concluded that the playoff winner is likely to capture second place, with Paraguay following in third, leaving Australia struggling considerably. Donovan's comments highlight his competitive spirit and his unwavering faith in the U.S. team's capabilities as hosts in the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup.
