In a decisive match on Friday, Novak Djokovic surged into the ATP final in Athens, defeating Germany's Yannick Hanfmann with a score of 6-3, 6-4. This victory sets the stage for a title showdown against Lorenzo Musetti from Italy, who reached the final by overcoming Sebastian Korda in a hard-fought clash that ended 6-0, 5-7, 7-5.
The 38-year-old Serbian star accomplished the win in just 79 minutes, effectively ending a frustrating period of four consecutive semi-final losses at significant tournaments, including Roland Garros, Wimbledon, the US Open, and Shanghai. His last win in a semi-final was in May in Geneva, where he celebrated his 100th career singles title, trailing only Roger Federer (103) and Jimmy Connors (109) in total titles.
“I feel this was the best performance I've delivered in this tournament,” Djokovic remarked. “It came at the perfect moment. Hanfmann is a formidable opponent with a powerful serve and strong game, so maintaining focus was crucial.”
Djokovic initiated his momentum with a break at 3-2, taking the first set 6-3, and bounced back from an early setback in the second to conclude the match 6-4.
This Athens event marks a replacement for the brief Belgrade Open on the ATP schedule, and Djokovic was warmly welcomed by enthusiastic local supporters.
“I appreciate the fantastic turnout in this incredible stadium once again,” he expressed. “I've played in renowned indoor venues globally, but this one certainly ranks among my top three experiences.”
Meanwhile, Musetti's aspirations for the final are high, as a win would ensure his spot at the ATP Finals in Turin.
