Novak Djokovic said he was taken aback by remarks from Italian tennis official Angelo Binaghi suggesting the Serb would appear at the 2025 ATP Finals. Competing at the Hellenic Championship in Athens, Djokovic made clear no decision had been communicated by him or his camp and that he would confirm his plans once the current event concludes.
Speaking after a straight-sets win over Chilean Alejandro Tabilo in his opening match, Djokovic addressed the rumours directly, denying any prior commitment and reiterating he would only make a call after the tournament has finished. He also noted the match’s difficulty, pointing out Tabilo had recently beaten him on clay in their previous meetings.
Djokovic admitted he felt heightened nerves ahead of the contest compared with other recent matches and said he leaned on the crowd’s energy to get through key moments. His victory in Athens keeps him moving through the draw as the Hellenic Championship continues.
The world No. 1 also reacted to repeated questions about retirement with visible frustration, arguing that he has earned the right to compete for as long as he chooses. He echoed sentiments expressed by Stan Wawrinka about enjoying the game on one’s own conditions.
Emphasising control over his career, Djokovic said he intends to compete where and when he wants, not according to outside expectations. With the ATP Finals speculation still circulating, his immediate priority remains delivering strong performances in Athens before mapping out any future commitments on the tour.
