Immigration Minister Lena Diab found herself in a heated dialogue with Conservative critic Michelle Rempel Garner during a House of Commons committee session on Thursday. They discussed vital issues ranging from immigration quotas and visa alterations to the treatment of non-citizen offenders.
Rempel Garner pressed Diab regarding the government's imminent C-12 legislation, which may permit widespread alterations or suspensions of immigration documentation. Diab clarified that the intent of the law is not to extend visas, yet refrained from elaborating on its practical applications. The back-and-forth escalated, with Rempel Garner accusing Diab of delivering a "word salad" in her responses, prompting Diab to respond humorously, expressing her enjoyment for authentic Lebanese salads like fattoush and tabbouleh.
The committee also delved into instances where non-citizen offenders received lenient sentences, with Rempel Garner scrutinizing Diab on the government’s position regarding deportations. Diab reaffirmed that sentencing is independently determined by the judiciary, but assured that the removal of foreign criminals would be enacted when deemed necessary.
The meeting commenced with committee chair Julie Dzerowicz reading a letter from Diab’s deputy minister that pointed to incidents of bullying and harassment faced by public officials who testified. The letter cautioned against the sharing of out-of-context testimony snippets online, citing potential security concerns for the involved staff.
Diab focused on the government's updated immigration objectives, which include reductions in temporary resident numbers and slight cuts in permanent resident admissions aimed at maintaining "sustainable and predictable levels." Permanent resident admissions are set to stabilize at 380,000 annually for three years, a decrease from 395,000 in 2025, while temporary resident targets will be reduced by about 45% from 673,650 in 2025 to 370,000 in 2027 and 2028. These changes address worries about the post-COVID integration capacity and a drop in public backing for elevated immigration levels.
