New Delhi: In a decisive move to address the widespread travel disruptions caused by IndiGo's recent flight cancellations, the Indian government has instructed the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to reduce the airline's winter schedule by five percent. This translates to approximately 110 flights being cut daily to facilitate smoother airport operations through reallocating slots to other carriers.
Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu discussed the situation in the Rajya Sabha, attributing the cancellations to an "internal crisis" within IndiGo stemming from new passenger safety regulations. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew members, making it clear that rigorous action will be enforced against any breaches. “The challenges faced by passengers due to IndiGo's crew management failures cannot be ignored. We aim to set a benchmark for operational standards across airlines,” Naidu emphasized.
According to DGCA data, IndiGo was scheduled to handle 15,014 departures per week for Winter Schedule 2025, yet November saw a shortfall with 951 cancellations logged. Despite an expanded fleet, the airline struggled to maintain efficient operations for its approximately 2,200 flights per day, prompting the regulator's intervention to minimize disruptions particularly in high-demand routes.
The crisis was exacerbated by the rollout of new flight safety regulations intended to mitigate pilot fatigue. Instituted almost two years ago, these rules mandate increased rest periods for pilots to enhance safety protocols. However, their implementation led to a pronounced crew shortage for IndiGo, prompting a substantial number of flight cancellations. While the DGCA temporarily eased some requirements to tackle immediate issues, a return to strict compliance is now necessary to avert future disruptions.
Minister Naidu also projected the Indian aviation sector's potential, advocating for competition among major airlines. However, his statements prompted protests from opposition lawmakers during the session.
Following a week of chaos at airports, wherein numerous passengers were left stranded—impacting important personal events and plans—the DGCA's decision signifies an effort to reinforce the stability of domestic air travel and rebuild trust in India's aviation system.
