In a devastating incident, flash floods in the Atlantic coastal province of Safi, Morocco, have resulted in the loss of at least 37 lives following a sudden torrent of heavy rain. Local authorities reported that intense rainfall on Sunday transformed streets into raging torrents, causing chaos among residents and flooding low-lying areas. The disastrous floods have led to significant damage, submerging roads and trapping individuals in their homes and businesses.
As a result, at least 14 individuals have been hospitalized, two of whom are currently in intensive care. While emergency services responded promptly, they encountered challenges due to the rapid rise of water levels, complicating rescue operations. Authorities confirmed that search and rescue efforts are underway to locate any additional victims, while medical teams are tending to the injured.
Footage circulating on social media depicts muddy waters sweeping away vehicles and debris throughout various neighborhoods in Safi. Local officials indicated that approximately 70 homes and businesses in the city's historical quarter were inundated by a mere hour of relentless rain. Many residents faced the loss of essential belongings as their homes were swiftly flooded.
The Safi governorate has announced the implementation of security measures aimed at safeguarding the impacted communities and assisting residents in need. Nevertheless, some locals voiced concerns over the delayed deployment of water-pumping trucks to mitigate floodwaters. The flooding also wreaked havoc on transportation, obstructing several routes leading to and from the coastal port city.
Reports from local media indicate that a crucial road connecting Safi with surrounding towns suffered severe damage due to the floods. In response, educational authorities opted to suspend classes across all schools in Safi for Monday. By Sunday evening, water levels had receded, leaving behind a scene of thick mud, damaged infrastructure, and ruined possessions, as residents started the arduous cleanup process.
Weather experts have cautioned that more heavy rainfall may be anticipated in various regions of Morocco in the forthcoming days. The country also faces snowfall in the Atlas Mountains after enduring numerous years of drought, coinciding with 2024 marking Morocco’s hottest year. These floods in Safi followed another tragic event in Fes, where 19 individuals perished due to collapsing buildings, raising alarms regarding the impacts of extreme weather and the integrity of infrastructure.
