In a heartbreaking incident on Wednesday, Fez witnessed the collapse of two four-story buildings in the Al-Mustaqbal district, resulting in 19 fatalities and 16 injuries. These buildings housed eight families, and the abrupt disaster has alarmed the community regarding the safety of surrounding structures.
Emergency services, local police, and rescue workers arrived promptly at the disaster site. Their continuous efforts throughout the night focused on locating survivors trapped beneath the debris. The injured individuals were swiftly transported to the university hospital in Fez for immediate medical attention, with officials closely monitoring their recovery.
This unfortunate event has brought to light the precarious condition of older buildings in Morocco, particularly in densely populated neighborhoods. Fez, known as a former capital and a vibrant cultural center, hosts numerous historic areas, making safety inspections imperative to avoid such incidents in the future. Authorities are urging residents to report any visible structural issues in their homes.
The majority of Morocco's populace, along with key financial and industrial sectors, is situated in the northwest region. Conversely, other areas depend on tourism, agriculture, and fishing for their livelihoods. The ongoing rescue operations underscore the urgent need for improved safety regulations and preparedness measures to safeguard urban residents.
