In a dramatic turn of events, Brazil witnessed the arrest of ex-President Jair Bolsonaro by federal police in Brasília on Saturday, just days prior to the commencement of his 27-year prison sentence due to his involvement in a failed coup attempt.
The Supreme Court, led by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, sanctioned the preemptive arrest following accusations that Bolsonaro had tampered with his mandated ankle monitor. The court expressed concerns about the possibility of him seeking asylum at nearby embassies or fleeing in light of anticipated protests from his supporters.
At 70 years old, Bolsonaro was transferred from his affluent Jardim Botânico residence to the federal police headquarters early Saturday. The Justice underscored the need to conduct the arrest with respect towards the former president, advising against handcuffs or undue media attention.
This arrest came after Bolsonaro’s son, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, released a video that authorities claim incited followers to defy judicial rulings. Justice de Moraes characterized the video as an incitement to public unrest and an attack on democratic principles.
Bolsonaro’s supporters reacted with indignation, asserting that the arrest was unjust and alleging political bias within the court. Michelle Bolsonaro, the former first lady, expressed on social media that they would “not give up on our nation,” while party leaders pledged to rally behind him. Critics have maintained that the ankle monitor was functioning properly and have raised questions about the arrest's timing.
A divisive figure in Brazilian politics, Bolsonaro was convicted alongside several associates for leading a militant group aiming to overthrow the government following his electoral defeat to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022. Prosecutors revealed that the coup's plot entailed schemes to assassinate Lula and incite an insurrection earlier this year.
While barred from seeking office until 2030, Bolsonaro retains considerable influence over Brazil's far-right voter base. His links to international figures, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, have drawn global attention to this case.
