Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie, 22, has received formal support from the club after an alleged firearm threat in a north London neighbourhood in September. The Italy international, who has featured regularly this season, was reportedly the target of an incident that has drawn attention to player safety off the pitch.
Metropolitan Police records indicate the episode took place late on September 6. Officers attended after a man in his 20s—identified as Udogie—was allegedly threatened with a gun. Investigators say a second man in his 20s was reportedly blackmailed and threatened by the same suspect. No physical injuries were recorded in either case.
A 31-year-old was detained on September 8 on suspicion of possessing firearms with intent, blackmail, and driving without a licence. He has since been released on bail while detectives continue their enquiries. Police stress the matter remains under active investigation.
Tottenham has confirmed it is supporting Udogie and his relatives. A club spokesperson said: "We have been providing support to Destiny and his family since the incident and will continue to do so. As this is a police matter, we are unable to comment further."
On the field, Udogie featured in Tottenham’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Copenhagen on Tuesday, demonstrating professional focus amid the ongoing probe.
The episode underlines the off-field risks faced by high-profile footballers living in populated urban areas. Clubs have increasingly prioritised player welfare, security measures and mental health resources in response to such incidents.
Udogie joined Tottenham from Udinese and has been praised for his attacking contributions from left-back, earning starts for both club and country. The club says the incident has not altered his role in the squad.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact police, and Tottenham says it is cooperating with law enforcement to help ensure the safety of its players and staff.
The investigation is ongoing as officers and the club continue to manage both the legal and welfare aspects of the case.
