Desert Vipers Snap Capitals’ Streak with Dramatic Win

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Dubai: In an electrifying start to the DP World ILT20 season on Tuesday, the Desert Vipers halted their six-match losing streak against last year's champions, Dubai Capitals, securing a thrilling four-wicket victory at Dubai International Stadium.

Choosing to bowl first, the Vipers executed a disciplined bowling strategy, limiting the Capitals to a total of 150 for 8. Key contributions from bowlers Noor Ahmad, David Payne, and Khuzaima Tanveer, each taking two wickets, prevented the defending champions from establishing any rhythm.

In pursuit of a manageable target, the Vipers benefited from an impressive half-century by Andries Gous. Alongside Fakhar Zaman, Gous forged a rapid 50-run opening partnership, setting a strong foundation. Zaman made 26, while Gous reached his fifty in just 32 balls, striking six fours and two sixes. Although the Vipers lost quick wickets later, Dan Lawrence and Khuzaima Tanveer successfully guided them to victory in 19 overs, marking the franchise’s 21st win in the tournament—an all-time high.

The Capitals faced challenges from the outset, sinking to 32 for 3 during the powerplay. While Rovman Powell scored 39 and Mohammad Nabi added 29, their efforts fell short as the team struggled to exceed a modest total.

This match also showcased the first competitive outing for the newly constituted squads following the player auction held in October. The six franchises demonstrated well-rounded rosters, combining international stars with local and associate nation talent, including players from Saudi Arabia, as per the league's composition rules.

With this confident display, Desert Vipers signal their intent for a competitive season, aiming to reclaim the title.
