As the winter season approaches, many individuals experience dry, flaky, and irritated skin. Experts reveal that the cold air coupled with low humidity diminishes the skin’s natural moisture barrier. To combat this issue, Dr. Garekar, a renowned dermatologist, has provided straightforward advice on maintaining skin health during the chilly months. This guidance, shared in an online discussion, targets common winter skincare pitfalls that often go unnoticed.
A significant misstep many make is indulging in long hot showers. While a hot bath can be soothing on a frigid day, Dr. Garekar highlights that hot water strips the skin of essential oils, lipids, and moisturizers. This often results in a dry and tense feeling post-bath. Instead, she recommends bathing in lukewarm water and immediately applying moisturizer after stepping out, helping to retain hydration.
Additionally, while room heaters are popular for warmth, they tend to dry out indoor air. The dermatologist suggests using heaters intermittently rather than leaving them on continuously. Restoring moisture in the air can be beneficial; a humidifier is an excellent tool, but a simple bowl of water placed near the heater can also help maintain humidity.
This advice extends beyond facial care to include scalp health. Dr. Garekar advises washing hair with lukewarm water and finishing with a cold rinse to preserve the natural oils in the scalp and to avoid itching or flaking skin, which often arises during winter.
Keeping hydrated is crucial in winter. Even though colder temperatures often lead to reduced water intake, Dr. Garekar emphasizes that staying hydrated is vital for skin health. She suggests drinking between 2 to 2.5 liters of water daily, based on an individual's activity level. Engaging in indoor exercises like yoga, dancing, or skipping for just 20 to 30 minutes also bolsters overall wellness.
Dr. Garekar concludes that winter skincare doesn’t have to be complex. Simple, daily habits yield significant improvements in skin health. Utilizing gentle cleansers, moisturizing consistently, and avoiding excessively hot water are key to upholding the skin’s moisture barrier. It is equally important to be mindful of one’s home environment and to stay hydrated throughout the day.
With the right mindset and care, winter can be transformed into a season of soft, healthy skin instead of one plagued by dryness and irritation.
