DeepMind Establishes New AI Research Center in Singapore

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

DeepMind has inaugurated a new research center in Singapore, signifying a pivotal moment for the Asia Pacific region as a producer of artificial intelligence technologies, rather than merely a market. Recruitment efforts have commenced, focusing on crafting solutions that resonate with the area’s rich tapestry of languages, cultures, and practical applications.

This initiative follows DeepMind's substantial growth throughout Asia, where the company has seen its regional personnel more than double within the past year. Singapore's status as a technological leader, buoyed by initiatives like the National AI Strategy 2.0 and Smart Nation 2.0, has been instrumental in attracting this cutting-edge research facility.

Unlike the teams in India and Japan formed through the integration of DeepMind and Google Brain, the Singapore lab marks the first fully independent establishment. Its researchers will actively enhance the Gemini model, prioritizing AI inclusivity for the Asia Pacific audience. Collaborative efforts include partnerships with AI Singapore on SEA-LION, a suite of language models that embody the region’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.

The new center is also anticipated to assist Google Cloud clients in key sectors like education, healthcare, and scientific research. Initial projects focusing on weather forecasting, multilingual abilities, and applied AI solutions aim to benefit both local users and the global community.

DeepMind's expanding role in Singapore builds on previous collaborations, which include testing autonomous systems with local government agencies and aiding neuroscience research via AlphaFold. Furthermore, the company is enhancing training opportunities through free access programs for students and support for AI startups.

While specific investment amounts and hiring goals have not been disclosed, DeepMind has announced that its recruitment will include new hires, internal transfers from Google, and returning Singaporean talent eager to contribute to the country’s flourishing AI landscape.
