Former USA Olympic gold medalist David Lee has orchestrated the Bengaluru Torpedoes' triumph in the 2025 Prime Volleyball League (PVL), reflecting his keen insight into the evolving Indian volleyball scene. With six years in India as both player and coach, Lee attributes the sport’s uplift to the emergence of youthful talent.
“The younger generation is creating a significant impact at an earlier stage,” Lee noted, commending the enthusiasm that has taken over from veteran players who previously held sway. Despite India's sparse international accolades — notably no Olympic spots and few Asian titles since the 1980s — the national team is beginning to shine, clinching a silver medal in this year’s CAVA Nations League.
Lee also emphasized that while Indian athletes show prowess in offensive maneuvers like spiking and blocking, a notable shortcoming remains in defense and ball control. “Nations such as Japan, Korea, and China excel in passing and defense, and that’s where India needs significant improvement,” he articulated.
The development of the sport has been dampened by political turmoil within the Volleyball Federation of India (VFI), which has undergone multiple suspensions in recent years. The PVL, now functioning autonomously from the federation, has seen its growth, expanding to ten teams and successfully completing four seasons.
Lee is a proponent of prolonging the PVL season and enhancing national team training camps, believing that these steps are crucial for building consistency and gaining international experience necessary for India to elevate its volleyball status.
