Cortina d'Ampezzo Implements Ticket Restrictions for Winter Olympics

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy – As anticipation builds for the upcoming 2026 Winter Olympics, officials in Cortina d’Ampezzo have announced restricted ticket sales due to significant transport challenges. The delays concerning the construction of a vital cable car system are driving this decision, affecting spectators' access to the events.

The crucial Apollonio-Socrepes gondola, which is intended to transport fans from the town to the Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre, has not met its construction timelines. Locals are concerned that without this lift, congestion issues will severely hinder guest mobility.

In addition to alpine skiing, Cortina is slated to host competitions in curling, bobsleigh, luge, and skeleton. Transport councillor Massimo Bortoluzzi has indicated a reduction in expected spectators from 200,000 to an estimated 170,000, reflecting the current limitations of the transportation infrastructure.

This historic venue, which previously held the Winter Games in 1956, faces unique logistical obstacles. With no train station available and traffic often at a standstill, managing the influx of visitors, comprising over three times the town’s 5,500 residents, is a formidable task. During the Olympics, only vehicles with special permits will be permitted entry, mainly for locals and essential services. Spectators will need to use shuttle buses from designated parking areas to attend events.

Designed to carry a maximum of 2,400 passengers per hour through its 50 cabins and three stations, the gondola has been hindered by legal challenges, ground stability issues related to landslides, and a protracted approval process. However, authorities express optimism that it will be operational ahead of the Games.

With stringent regulations in place, organizers are striving to ensure safety, manage visitor flow, and uphold the Olympic spirit in this renowned alpine town.
