Cooper Flagg Shatters LeBron James’ Long-Standing Record with 42 Points

Post by : Mara Rahim

In a remarkable display, rookie Cooper Flagg of the Dallas Mavericks eclipsed a record that stood for over two decades, scoring 42 points during a 140-133 overtime defeat to the Utah Jazz. Now 18, Flagg claims the record for the highest points by a player of this age in NBA history, overtaking LeBron James’ previous record of 37 points set in December 2003.

Flagg was instrumental in leveling the match with a spectacular free-throw performance in the dying moments of the fourth quarter, pushing the game into overtime. He netted 40 points in regulation time and added 2 more during the extra session, although the Mavericks couldn't clinch the victory. Anthony Davis was sidelined due to a left calf injury.

Most of Flagg’s points were generated close to the basket and from the charity stripe. He achieved a shooting percentage of 9-of-17 from inside the lane and converted 15 of 20 free throws, racking up 24 points in the first half alone. His 42 points now ties the record for the highest score by a Mavericks rookie, a feat previously matched by Mark Aguirre in 1981.

After experiencing a slow start in the season while playing out of position as a point guard, Flagg has returned to his natural position as a forward. This transition has showcased his potential as the number one draft pick from last summer. His contributions extended beyond scoring, as he also registered seven rebounds, six assists, and two blocks in the match.

Despite the loss, Flagg's performance marks a high point in his budding career. He will have opportunities to further his record in forthcoming matches against the Detroit Pistons and the Philadelphia 76ers. Additionally, he is set to celebrate his 19th birthday this Sunday, just days after achieving this historic milestone.
