Constitution Bars Zohran Mamdani From U.S. Presidency Despite Historic NYC Victory

Post by : Raina Nasser

New York City: At 34, Zohran Mamdani has become New York City's youngest mayor-elect since 1892 and its first Muslim mayor after defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. His triumph represents a major achievement, but under the existing U.S. Constitution he is not eligible to pursue the presidency.

US Constitutional Requirements

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 sets out that the president must be a natural-born citizen, at least 35 years old, and have lived in the United States for 14 years. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda and was naturalized in 2018, meaning he does not fulfil the "natural-born" citizenship condition and therefore cannot hold the presidency absent a constitutional amendment.

A Historic Mayoral Win

Mamdani's path to City Hall defied expectations: he began with limited visibility, scant financial resources and little institutional backing, but a grassroots effort propelled him to victory.

In his victory statement, he said:
"New York will remain a city shaped and led by immigrants. I am young, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist, and I will not apologise for any of that."

He also promised to start each day focused on a single aim: to make the city better than it was the day before, signalling a commitment to progressive policies and inclusive leadership.

Family Background and Public Profile

Mamdani comes from a distinguished family. His father, Mahmood Mamdani, is a Ugandan-born academic of Indian descent who teaches at Columbia University, while his mother, Mira Nair, is the Indian-American filmmaker known for Monsoon Wedding and The Namesake.

Though his mayoral victory is a significant milestone for representation in New York politics, the Constitution's natural-born citizen requirement highlights the legal limits that prevent many accomplished immigrants from seeking the nation's highest office.
