The daughter of Jimmy Lai, the imprisoned media magnate from Hong Kong, has raised an urgent alarm regarding her father's declining health, asserting that years of incarceration have left him significantly weakened and his condition is deteriorating rapidly.
At 78, Jimmy Lai has been incarcerated since December 2020 and potentially faces a lifetime behind bars after being convicted under the contentious national security law in Hong Kong. His daughter, Claire Lai, who now resides in exile in London, expresses fears of never seeing her father outside of prison again.
Claire painted a picture of her father as a robust individual prior to his arrest, but lamented the severe decline in his health during his detention. She disclosed that Lai has experienced significant weight loss and has developed serious health issues not previously present, including diabetes and heart complications.
She stated that his physical health has deteriorated to a concerning level. His fingernails exhibit a purplish-grey hue and occasionally fall off, his dental health is deteriorating, and he often suffers from severe pain in his back and waist. On some occasions, she noted, he struggles to stand, is confined to his bed, or is unable to move without experiencing pain.
The Lai family has continuously voiced their worries over his health, asserting that his bodily condition is deteriorating due to prolonged incarceration. They have urged officials to take into account his age and health, underscoring that extended imprisonment could pose a severe risk to his life. Despite these alarms, Hong Kong and Chinese authorities refute allegations of mistreatment, asserting that Lai's rights are respected and he remains healthy in lawful custody.
Jimmy Lai, a British national and founder of the now-closed pro-democracy newspaper Apple Daily, stands as the most high-profile figure charged under the 2020 national security law, enacted after widespread pro-democracy demonstrations in Hong Kong. Detractors argue that this legislation has effectively suppressed dissent and impinged on press freedoms, while Beijing argues that it is essential for maintaining order and stability in the region.
The UK government has condemned Lai's conviction as politically driven and a breach of free speech rights. British authorities have called for the repeal of the national security law and an end to prosecutions under it. The Lai family is now urging British officials to advocate for his case at high diplomatic levels, hoping international pressure may facilitate his release before his health declines further.
