San Diego Green Card Interview Debacle: US Spouses Held in Detention

Post by : Raina Nasser

In San Diego, numerous foreign spouses of U.S. citizens have faced unexpected detentions during their green card interviews, leaving families in distress over the immigration process. Since November 12, federal authorities have reportedly taken spouses into custody amid claims of visa violations. This alarming trend impacts citizens hailing from countries like the United Kingdom and Germany, shining a light on rising tensions within the U.S. immigration framework.

For couples newly united in marriage, the pursuit of a green card symbolizes a new beginning and the hope of legally residing together in the U.S. However, recent interactions at the San Diego immigration office have transformed a normally straightforward procedure into a harrowing ordeal. Among those detained are new mothers holding their infants, heightening the emotional toll of the situation. One American husband, Stephen Paul, shared the heart-wrenching experience of having his wife, Katie, a British national, taken away in handcuffs right after her interview, leaving him alone with their five-month-old child.

Military families haven't been spared either. Samuel Shasteen, a former U.S. Marine with two decades of service, expressed feelings of betrayal after his Thailand-born wife was apprehended. “We dedicate our lives to protect this country, only to be treated like this,” he lamented to NBC San Diego.

Authorities justify the detentions as part of a wider effort against illegal immigration. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has made it clear that any foreign individual breaching immigration laws could be arrested and deported regardless of their nationality. ICE further stressed that merely being unlawfully present in the U.S. constitutes a federal crime.

These detentions have ignited outrage among the public and human rights activists. Families contend that the current green card protocols in San Diego are inflicting undue trauma, separating loved ones and instilling fear within immigrant communities. Legal professionals warn that such stringent enforcement could affect thousands of foreign spouses nationwide, not limited to San Diego.

As developments unfold, attention remains on safeguarding families while navigating intricate immigration laws. The detainment of foreign spouses during San Diego's green card interviews raises urgent concerns about fairness, legal proceedings, and the human implications of immigration enforcement in the U.S.
