Seoul and UAE Unite for AI Innovation with New Task Force

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

South Korea is advancing its artificial intelligence agenda through a newly established alliance with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The presidential AI committee revealed on Monday the formation of a collaborative task force dedicated to enhancing AI efforts, following discussions held at last week’s summit featuring President Lee Jae Myung and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Co-led by the presidential secretary for AI policy and future planning along with the vice chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), the task force aims to create a supportive public-private partnership and pinpoint significant investment and developmental undertakings to be initiated within the year.

This initiative will include five targeted working groups directed by relevant ministries such as the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of Climate, Environment and Energy. Both leaders emphasized a focus on joint development and marketing in the AI sector, alongside integrated efforts in energy and defense during the Seoul-Abu Dhabi summit.

Seven memorandums of understanding were signed to enhance collaboration, with South Korea participating in the UAE’s Stargate project aimed at advancing AI and energy infrastructure. The Stargate project plans to construct an AI data center cluster in Abu Dhabi, commencing with a 200-megawatt facility next year as part of an expansive 5-gigawatt AI campus.

In the face of these global strategies, South Korea's market adopted a cautious tone. The KOSPI index slipped 0.19 percent to 3,846.06 following a sharp decline on Friday, indicating ongoing concerns surrounding AI stocks. Initially, foreign investors provided optimism for trading; however, they later became net sellers, influencing the index negatively.

With this strategic collaboration, South Korea and the UAE aspire to establish themselves at the forefront of innovation in AI, energy advancement, and transnational technological cooperation.
