U.S. Team Led by Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz Gears Up for 2026 United Cup

Post by : Mina Rahman

As the United States prepares to defend its title, Coco Gauff, currently ranked third, and sixth-ranked Taylor Fritz unite to represent the nation in the distinctive United Cup—a combined ATP and WTA event. The competition kicks off on January 2, 2026, in Perth and Sydney, Australia, marking the beginning of the tennis season’s major team event.

This unique tournament showcases 18 teams, with each team comprising one ATP and one WTA player, engaging in a round-robin format across six groups of three. The top team from each group, alongside the best runner-up, will progress to the quarterfinals, with semifinals and finals set for January 10 and 11 in Sydney. Matches will be held on hard courts, allowing players to gain crucial competitive experience before the Australian Open, starting January 18 in Melbourne.

The U.S. enters as the defending champions, having captured the title in 2025 by overcoming Poland 2-0 in the final, an impressive feat following their first win in 2023 against Italy with a score of 4-0 under a different format. Last year, Germany took home the championship, narrowly beating Poland 2-1.

Poland is set to challenge again, boasting No. 2 ranked Iga Swiatek and ex-top-10 ATP player Hubert Hurkacz, who is currently ranked No. 73. The U.S. faces stiff opposition in Group A, with matches against Argentina on January 3 and Spain on January 5 in Perth.

Each United Cup matchup will include an ATP singles match, a WTA singles match, and a mixed doubles match—creating a vibrant showcase of talent from both tours. With top players vying for early-season success and national pride, the 2026 United Cup is set to deliver exciting tennis and offer a glimpse into the upcoming season.
