Bologna Triumphs Over Inter Milan to Secure Super Cup Final Spot

Post by : Mara Rahim

On Friday, Bologna advanced to the Italian Super Cup final, triumphing over Inter Milan in a gripping encounter held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The match concluded with a 1-1 scoreline, leading to a penalty shootout where Bologna prevailed 3-2. Ciro Immobile, returning from injury, netted the decisive penalty, ensuring Bologna’s match-up against Serie A titleholders Napoli on Monday. Napoli secured their spot earlier by overcoming AC Milan with a 2-0 victory.

Immobile expressed his relief following a challenging season filled with injury woes, stating, "Three and a half months of suffering have passed, supported by my wonderful family." His game-winning penalty, executed before a modest crowd in Saudi Arabia, marked a moment of personal triumph.

Throughout the match, Inter Milan started off strong, with Marcus Thuram scoring an early volley to draw first blood. However, Riccardo Orsolini equalized for Bologna with a penalty just before halftime. The stalemate persisted through regulation and into the penalty shootout, where Bologna showcased composure, successfully converting all their kicks, while Inter's Alessandro Bastoni, Nicolo Barella, and Ange-Yoan Bonny faltered.

The Italian Super Cup format traditionally involves the winners of the Serie A and the Coppa Italia. Since 2023, it has been expanded to include the runners-up from both competitions, and the tournament will be held in Saudi Arabia until 2029.

As Bologna readies to face Napoli in the final, Immobile remarked, "Napoli are in excellent form, but it’s a singular match where anything can happen." Enthusiasm builds among fans for what promises to be an exhilarating showdown between the two formidable Italian sides.
