Cinematheque Francaise Closes Doors for a Month Due to Bedbug Issue

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

In a significant move, the renowned Cinematheque Francaise in Paris has ceased operations for its four screening halls for a month due to several reports of bedbug sightings, notably during a crowded master class with Hollywood star Sigourney Weaver. The esteemed institution announced this closure on Friday, affirming the necessity of this measure to provide a “perfectly safe and comfortable environment” for its visitors.

The decision comes in light of growing concerns over the past few weeks. Audience members had reported bites and sightings of bedbugs during Weaver’s session, revealing that some had witnessed these pests crawling on seats and clothing. Such complaints escalated, prompting the organization to respond with decisive action.

Located in the eastern part of Paris, the Cinematheque typically features three public screening halls, with a fourth designated for educational programs. Currently, all four have been sealed off to facilitate a comprehensive cleaning process. Each seating unit will be taken apart and subjected to multiple treatments with 180°C dry steam before being examined by trained sniffer dogs. The carpets and floors will undergo the same rigorous cleaning standards.

While other sections of the venue, such as the ongoing exhibition on Orson Welles, remain accessible, the suspension of film screenings represents a rare disruption for this iconic institution, known for safeguarding centuries of cinematic history.

Bedbug incidents have risen across France recently. Reports in 2023 highlighted infestations in cinemas, hospitals, and public transportation as the nation gears up for the 2024 Olympics. This increase has led to a nationwide cleaning campaign and heightened public anxiety, further intensified by online speculation.

Commonly hiding in mattresses, clothing, luggage, and narrow spaces, bedbugs can inflict itchy red bites, causing discomfort and stress, as well as sleep disturbances for those affected.

Currently, the Cinematheque aims to finish its cleanup by next month, with hopes to reopen its doors to film enthusiasts once every hall has been deemed safe and ready for regular operations.
