In 2024, the number of people reading online literature in China grew to 575 million. This is a big increase from about 500 million readers in 2023. The information comes from the 2024 Blue Book of Online Literature, which was shared by the China Writers Association on Monday.
The report collected data from 50 of the top online literature websites across China. It showed that the online literature industry earned around 44 billion yuan (about 6.1 billion US dollars) in 2024.
Most readers are adults between the ages of 26 and 45, making up about half of all readers. Young people born after 2000 also make up a large part of the audience—almost one in four readers.
By the end of 2024, there were over 33 million online stories and books available in China. That’s 2 million more than the year before, showing a 7% growth.
Good quality stories are coming out in many styles like realistic stories, science fiction, and historical fiction. These new works are helping to make modern Chinese literature richer and more exciting.
Science fiction is especially popular. In 2024, about 180,000 new sci-fi stories were published. This shows how the genre is becoming more important and reaching more people.
Chinese online literature is also becoming popular outside China. In 2024, about 200 million readers from other countries were active on Chinese platforms. Around 30 million new overseas readers joined last year.
There are also many new writers from overseas who create stories locally. In 2024, 120,000 new overseas authors and 500,000 new stories from outside China appeared on Chinese platforms.
The number of Chinese online stories translated into other languages grew too. Around 40,000 works were translated and shared worldwide.
Sun Jiashan, a researcher at the Central Academy of Culture and Tourism Administration, said that Chinese online literature is popular globally because it offers many different types of stories. These include fantasy, historical fiction, romance, and science fiction. Unique Chinese story styles like Wuxia (martial heroes), Xianxia (immortal heroes), and Xuanhuan (fantasy adventures) attract international readers by offering new cultural experiences.
Sun also mentioned that the rise in overseas popularity is helped by AI translation tools and foreign online platforms. These tools make translations faster and more accurate, helping readers around the world enjoy Chinese stories more easily.
In short, Chinese online literature is growing fast at home and gaining many new fans worldwide, thanks to fresh stories and smart technology.
