In a landmark event for its naval ambitions, China has officially launched its third aircraft carrier, named Fujian, enhancing its maritime might significantly. This development solidifies China’s standing as the second-largest operator of aircraft carriers globally, following the United States.
The commissioning ceremony, which took place earlier this week with President Xi Jinping in attendance, highlighted China's aspirations to emerge as a formidable maritime power in the Asia-Pacific region. The Fujian, named after a province in southeastern China, is a testament to the country’s advancements in naval engineering and military technology.
Distinct from its earlier vessels, the Fujian is China's inaugural aircraft carrier to incorporate an electromagnetic catapult launch system. This technology facilitates the launch of heavier, fully loaded aircraft, thus enhancing the operational range and strike potential of the carrier. It permits the deployment of cutting-edge aircraft, including the KJ-600 early-warning aircraft, the stealthy J-35 fighter, and the J-15T heavy fighter.
The Fujian stands out as China’s first domestically designed aircraft carrier, diverging from the Liaoning, which was a Soviet-era vessel acquired from Ukraine, and the Shandong, which was domestically constructed but based on Liaoning's design. This addition brings China’s total to three aircraft carriers, surpassing nations like India, the UK, and Italy, each of which operates two.
On a technological front, the Fujian ranks as the world’s second carrier equipped with an electromagnetic catapult system, an innovation previously exclusive to the U.S. Navy’s USS Gerald R. Ford. This advanced system replaces traditional steam-powered catapults, providing smoother, more efficient aircraft launches and reducing mechanical stress on both the ship and aircraft.
While the Fujian boasts a full-load displacement exceeding 80,000 tons, it is slightly smaller than the U.S. Nimitz and Ford-class carriers, which can top 100,000 tons. The Chinese carrier is reported to host between 40 and 60 aircraft, whereas American counterparts accommodate 60 to 70 planes typically.
Despite these advancements, a significant limitation is that China’s carriers are conventionally powered, which restricts their operational range to around 8,000 to 10,000 nautical miles. In contrast, U.S. carriers benefit from nuclear propulsion, granting them virtually unlimited range.
Defense experts anticipate that China is in the process of developing nuclear-powered aircraft carriers as part of its ongoing naval evolution. Analysts assert that the design and capabilities of the Fujian underscore a critical progression towards this goal, enabling China to extend its maritime influence into the Pacific Ocean and vital areas like the South China Sea, East China Sea, and Taiwan Strait.
The Fujian features three electromagnetic catapults, two aircraft elevators, and an optimized flight deck, establishing it as one of the most sophisticated vessels within China’s fleet. While it has slightly fewer launch systems than the USS Ford, the Fujian exemplifies China's burgeoning expertise in naval warfare technologies.
The commissioning of the Fujian marks a decisive message about China's aspirations at sea. Its entry into service not only bolsters China's defensive capabilities but also extends its strategic reach well beyond adjacent waters, thereby altering the global balance of naval power.
