In an exhilarating contest at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea matched Premier League frontrunners Arsenal, resulting in a 1-1 stalemate, showcasing the Blues' potential as rising contenders. Meanwhile, Alexander Isak broke his goal drought for Liverpool, while Tottenham's challenges continue under Thomas Frank with yet another home defeat.
The encounter between Chelsea and Arsenal was nothing short of intense. Despite a red card for Moises Caicedo in the 38th minute due to a reckless challenge on Mikel Merino, Chelsea stood firm. They took the lead with a powerful header from Trevoh Chalobah in the second half, mirroring Arsenal’s effective set-piece tactics.
Arsenal leveled the score through Merino in the 59th minute, drawing the match at 1-1. Though Chelsea trails the North London team by six points, manager Enzo Maresca expressed optimism. “We are moving in the right direction,” Maresca remarked, adding, “We’ll reassess our goals in February and March.” This match underscored Chelsea's ability to compete against top-tier teams despite adversities.
On the other hand, Alexander Isak finally found the back of the net for Liverpool, ending his struggle to score and alleviating concerns around his hefty £125 million transfer fee. On a brisk afternoon, Isak expertly converted Cody Gakpo’s pass from inside the box, marking his first league goal for Liverpool in ten outings.
Liverpool's manager Arne Slot highlighted the significance of this goal for the team and the striker himself. “Getting a goal crucial for the team and for him was essential,” he noted. This goal brought a sliver of optimism amidst Liverpool's recent dismal form, which saw them with nine losses in 12 matches across competitions.
Tottenham faced further disappointment, suffering a 2-1 defeat at home to Fulham. The opposition struck twice early, putting Spurs on the back foot, and despite Mohammed Kudus managing to score a consolation goal, it was insufficient for a positive outcome.
Thomas Frank, under increasing scrutiny after consecutive losses to Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain, acknowledged Tottenham's struggles, stating they had only secured three victories in their last 13 matches. While defending his methods, he admitted to the challenges faced, saying, “After conceding twice, our game plan became more complicated, and we rushed our play too much in certain areas.”
