In a surprising La Liga encounter, Real Madrid faced a 2-0 defeat at home to Celta Vigo, putting an end to their unbeaten record at the Santiago Bernabéu this season. Swedish substitute Williot Swedberg emerged as the star of the match, netting a remarkable heel flick goal in the 53rd minute and calmly finishing in stoppage time to secure the win. This loss positions Real Madrid four points behind league leaders Barcelona.
Celta Vigo, which surged from 14th to 10th place, showcased a solid defensive strategy that stifled Real Madrid’s offensive threats. Swedberg opened the scoring by directing a clever Bryan Zaragoza cross past Thibaut Courtois with a perfectly timed flick. His second goal, three minutes into injury time, saw him skillfully bypass the goalkeeper to confirm the win.
Real Madrid’s coach Xabi Alonso opted to rest centre-back Antonio Rudiger, starting Alvaro Carreras instead. However, Rudiger was called upon halfway through the first half due to Eder Militao's injury. Despite the reshuffle, Madrid found it challenging to penetrate Celta’s defensive setup, with key players like Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior consistently thwarted.
Celta’s goalkeeper, Ionut Radu, delivered an outstanding performance, making vital saves against Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, and Vinicius Junior. The best chance for Madrid in the first half belonged to Guler, whose well-placed shot sailed just wide after a brilliant setup from Mbappe.
The situation worsened for Madrid when Fran Garcia was shown two yellow cards in quick succession, leaving the team with ten men. Later, Carreras received a red card for dissent in stoppage time, reducing Madrid to just nine players as Celta solidified their victory.
Bellingham also exited the match with a cut following a confrontation with Borja Iglesias, adding to Madrid's frustrations. Iglesias later commended his team's defensive fortitude, calling the match's conclusion “strange” while praising their focus and effort on away turf.
Coach Alonso expressed dissatisfaction with his team's intensity and effort, noting frustrations with the referee's calls. “We performed better with 10 men than with 11 tonight,” Alonso stated. “We need to move on quickly; there are still many league matches ahead.”
This defeat marks a concerning trend for Real Madrid, who have only secured one win in their last five league outings, as they look ahead to hosting Manchester City in the Champions League this coming week.
