Ceasefire Exchange Continues as Gaza Receives 15 Palestinian Remains

Post by : Raina Nasser

Gaza health authorities reported that 15 Palestinian bodies were handed over by Israeli authorities, bringing the total returned since the ceasefire began to 285. The transfer followed Israel's delivery of the remains of an Israeli soldier taken during the October 7, 2023 attack that precipitated the conflict.

Since the truce that started on October 10, Hamas has returned the remains of 21 Israelis, and Israel has released 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli recovered. Officials say identification is difficult amid shortages of DNA testing kits and the widespread destruction across Gaza.

Hospital officials in Khan Younis warned that the process is further strained by fragile humanitarian conditions and urgent reconstruction needs. Only some of the returned bodies have been positively identified, prompting authorities to publish photographs to help families with recognition.

The gradual exchange of remains highlights delicate efforts to maintain the ceasefire while managing the consequences of one of Gaza's deadliest recent conflicts. Both sides continue to face complex logistical and humanitarian hurdles as communities seek stability and closure.
