Singapore Customs has issued a warning regarding two emerging scam tactics impacting the region, which are aimed at individuals via fake parcel notifications and phony official documents.
In the first scam, recipients receive messages asserting that their parcels are being held up due to compliance discrepancies. These communications come with fraudulent inspection notices purportedly from high-ranking officials. Victims are coerced into attending inspections or paying a so-called "verification fee" to avoid delays. Scammers prompt victims to complete a counterfeit inspection agreement form designed to gather personal and banking details.
As the deadline looms, the scammers ramp up their tactics with warnings of possible legal repercussions, attempting to involve law enforcement if payments are not made. Those who sought clarification revealed they were contacted via numbers registered outside Singapore, which suggests a networked cross-border operation.
A secondary variation of the scam presents fraudulent alerts indicating that valuable items linked to the victims are being detained. To bolster their claims, perpetrators share images of the supposed items and accompanying forged documents resembling genuine Customs paperwork. Victims are warned about item confiscation, financial penalties, or shipping restrictions unless they make immediate payments.
Singapore Customs reiterated that it never requests payment for parcel release, and all official communications occur via verified government channels. The agency emphasized that such scams undermine public trust and urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.
