Hong Kong, Nov 27, 2025: A catastrophic blaze at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po has claimed the lives of at least 44 individuals, shedding light on the dangers associated with bamboo scaffolding. The fire rapidly spread through green mesh and bamboo poles, leading to portions of the building's facade collapsing in flames.
While the fire's origin remains unclear, it quickly consumed the bamboo scaffolding utilized in the structure. Bamboo, bound with nylon cords, has been a cherished scaffolding material in Hong Kong and China for generations, valued for its flexibility, abundance, and economical nature. Despite the contemporary skyline, approximately 2,500 certified bamboo scaffolding artisans are still active in the city, although metal scaffolding is increasingly prevalent.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire as flames ravaged the scaffolding, while the safety mesh intended to catch falling debris also blazed. In response, the Hong Kong government has established a task force tasked with investigating the event and examining if the building’s external structure and scaffolding adhered to fire safety protocols.
Chief Executive John Lee affirmed that accountability for those responsible would be ensured and that safety regulations would be reassessed. Labour Secretary Chris Sun stated that a ban on bamboo scaffolding is not on the agenda at this moment, but reiterated that stricter fire-retardant measures for construction nets would be enforced.
Recently, there have been numerous fires tied to bamboo scaffolding, including incidents in Chinachem Tower and other residential units. Experts caution that many complexes still utilize combustible scaffolding materials, endangering both workers and residents.
The Hong Kong Labour Department has issued recommendations mandating that scaffolding nets and protective gear adhere to established fire-retardant standards. Advocacy organizations and whistle-blowers have continuously pointed out the lack of adequate safety measures in construction ventures, demanding more robust inspections.
As the city mourns the lost, officials are expected to fortify safety regulations and reevaluate the use of bamboo scaffolding in both residential and public construction projects.
