Canada Urges Immediate Release of Jimmy Lai

Post by : Mina Rahman

Canada has vocally condemned the politically motivated verdict against Hong Kong pro-democracy advocate and media entrepreneur Jimmy Lai, demanding his immediate release.

The 78-year-old, known for founding the now-defunct Apple Daily, was convicted of colluding with foreign entities to jeopardize national security and for publishing seditious content under Hong Kong's rigorously enforced China-imposed national security law. After spending five years in custody while awaiting trial, Lai now faces a potential life sentence.

Anita Anand, Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister, voiced significant concern regarding the diminishing rights and freedoms in Hong Kong, labeling Lai’s prosecution as “politically motivated.”

According to family reports, Lai’s health has deteriorated markedly due to solitary confinement. His daughter Claire highlighted that his primary focus remains on reuniting with family and finding peace.

International figures, including those from the U.S. and U.K., have raised concerns, advocating for Lai's release on humanitarian grounds. Canadian activists are urging the government to implement tangible diplomatic measures, such as sanctions against Hong Kong officials implicated in political oppression.

Lai’s situation has emerged as a pivotal issue in the global conversation surrounding press freedom, human rights, and judicial independence in Hong Kong, especially under the backdrop of increasing Chinese oversight.
