Canada Investigates Air India Following Pilot's Alleged Alcohol Violation

Post by : Mina Rahman

Canadian authorities have expressed deep safety concerns regarding Air India after reports surfaced claiming a pilot was intoxicated before duty at Vancouver International Airport.

The incident, which took place on December 23, 2025, involved Air India Flight AI186, set to fly from Vancouver to Delhi, with a stopover in Vienna. The flight encountered a last-minute delay when a cockpit crew member was barred from flying just prior to departure.

Air India acknowledged that the decision to relieve the pilot was made following inquiries by Canadian officials regarding the individual's ability to conduct the flight. This crew member was subsequently taken in for questioning by local authorities.

The airline reported that an alternative pilot was swiftly assigned to ensure compliance with safety protocols, leading to the delay. Air India expressed regret for the disruption caused to travelers and affirmed its cooperation with Canadian officials throughout the investigation.

A communication from Transport Canada, dated December 24, 2025, addressed to senior officials at Air India, indicated that two breathalyser tests administered by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) determined the pilot was under the influence, rendering them unfit for duty.

Transport Canada emphasized that this incident constitutes a breach of Canadian Aviation Regulations, specifically CARs 602.02 and 602.03, as well as stipulations detailed under Air India’s Foreign Air Operator Certificate.

The aviation regulatory body has indicated that both the RCMP and Transport Canada Civil Aviation may take enforcement actions as a result.

Air India stated that the pilot has been suspended from flying responsibilities pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. The airline reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy concerning aviation safety violations, promising stringent disciplinary measures should the allegations prove accurate.

This event has heightened scrutiny regarding pilot fitness and alcohol compliance standards for international carriers operating in Canadian airspace.
