Cameroon triumphed over Gabon with a 1-0 scoreline in an exhilarating Group F opener at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. The decisive goal was scored early, just six minutes in, when a striker based in Spain deftly converted a pass from Bryan Mbeumo, slipping the ball past Gabon's goalkeeper, Loyce Mbaba, after a VAR verification.
This victory places Cameroon alongside defending champions Ivory Coast at the summit of Group F, as all 24 nations have completed their opening matches.
The five-time Africa Cup of Nations champions have faced a turbulent period, including missing World Cup qualification and experiencing a coaching change mere weeks prior to the tournament. Furthermore, goalkeeper Andre Onana was omitted from the lineup.
Despite these hurdles, Cameroon displayed their strength, generating several scoring opportunities during the match. Particularly, Bryan Mbeumo was pivotal in setting up multiple chances. Junior Tchamadeu narrowly missed a chance at the start of the second half, and late in the match, substitute Frank Magri struck the crossbar with a header.
Gabon, lacking their star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who recently returned from a thigh injury, struggled in the initial phase. Both Aubameyang and Mario Lemina entered the field early in the 32nd minute, but Gabon couldn’t find their rhythm. Denis Bouanga created a few opportunities but fell short of making a significant impact, while Aubameyang was unable to regain his form in limited time.
