Cambodia has successfully repatriated soldiers previously detained by Thailand, marking a crucial development in alleviating tensions between the neighboring Southeast Asian nations. The transfer occurred at a specified border checkpoint at approximately 10 am local time on Wednesday, following 155 days of the soldiers' confinement in Thailand, as per Cambodia's Defence Ministry announcement.
This event follows the implementation of a ceasefire agreement that was initiated at noon last Saturday, halting nearly 20 days of fierce fighting along their disputed border. These conflicts resulted in over 101 fatalities and displaced more than half a million civilians from both sides. This escalation was one of the most severe in recent history, featuring air sorties, missile fire exchanges, and continuous artillery shelling.
The handover was initially scheduled for Tuesday; however, Thailand postponed it, claiming alleged violations of the ceasefire terms. Cambodian officials strongly denied these allegations, asserting their full compliance with ceasefire stipulations and their commitment to de-escalation.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the detained soldiers were treated in line with international humanitarian standards throughout their detention period.
The recent violence ignited earlier this month after a previous ceasefire, agreed in July, collapsed. That earlier agreement had been brokered through diplomatic channels involving US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, aimed at averting further conflict.
With soldiers now back on home soil and a ceasefire in effect, regional observers and international stakeholders are vigilantly watching to assess whether the peace will endure. There is widespread hope that these developments will foster continued dialogue and lead to lasting stability in the contested areas.
