Iain Rankin has recently stepped into the role of interim leader for the Nova Scotia Liberal Party and is urging the provincial government to enhance its focus on the economy. He is advocating for more collaboration, engaging the public in consultations, and formulating a definitive economic strategy.
Rankin succeeded Derek Mombourquette this week, as the party works toward electing a permanent leader after a disappointing election last year that saw them secure only two seats.
He stated that the province requires “a new set of goals for a modern economy” to address issues like U.S. tariffs and sluggish population growth that negatively impact revenues. Nova Scotia's deficit is forecasted to exceed $1 billion, with an update anticipated next week.
Rankin pointed out that the government is overly reliant on natural resources like oil, wind, and critical minerals, while neglecting sectors with higher growth potential such as tourism and maritime industries.
“Claiming to prioritize economic development while only responding to U.S. developments recently is somewhat of a cop-out,” Rankin remarked.
He is calling for cooperative efforts that include other political factions and community stakeholders, akin to the Ivany Report's decade-spanning economic strategy. Rankin desires that economic objectives are set in a way that allows for public tracking and measurement.
Premier Tim Houston has urged the Liberals to work with his administration to bolster Nova Scotia’s economy, stressing the importance of leveraging natural resources and assisting local enterprises.
Rankin has also highlighted the necessity for improved government spending management. The Progressive Conservatives have overshot their budget by around $1 billion each year, largely due to past population increases. With growth decelerating, he proposed a comprehensive review of all programs and departmental expenditures for better efficiency.
Meanwhile, Mombourquette continues to assist the party but has not disclosed plans regarding a candidacy for the permanent leadership position. Rankin has confirmed his disinterest in the role of permanent leader.
