Lower Brazilian house approves law to cut Bolsonaro's jail term, France 24, AFP report
Brazil is once again facing a wave of political tension after the country’s lower house of Congress approved a new bill that could sharply reduce former President Jair Bolsonaro’s prison sentence. The vote took place early Wednesday and has already created a heated debate across Brazil and beyond.
According to reports from France 24 and AFP, the bill could lower Bolsonaro’s current 27-year jail term to a little more than two years. This dramatic reduction would only take effect if Brazil’s Senate also supports the measure. As of now, the government has not responded to questions about the report, and Reuters has not independently confirmed the details.
Bolsonaro’s legal troubles began after he was convicted for attempting to overturn the results of the 2022 election, which he lost to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Authorities found that he was involved in efforts to encourage supporters to challenge the democratic process, leading to riots on January 8, 2023. Those riots targeted important government buildings in Brasília and were widely condemned both inside and outside Brazil.
The former president started serving his sentence last month at the Federal Police Superintendency in Brasília. Despite his imprisonment, he continues to have strong support from many political allies and loyal followers. This was visible during the vote in the lower house, as many supporters cheered when the bill passed.
Bolsonaro’s defense team has been actively working to change his conditions of imprisonment. On Tuesday, his lawyers filed a request asking for him to be moved from jail to a hospital for “surgical procedures.” They also repeated their request for him to be allowed to serve the rest of his sentence under “humanitarian house arrest.” These requests suggest growing concern within his circle about his health and living conditions in prison.
However, the new bill has opened a fresh chapter in Brazil’s long-running political divide. Supporters say the law is necessary to ensure fair treatment for everyone who was charged after the January 8 riots. They argue that many sentences were too harsh and need to be adjusted.
Critics, on the other hand, believe the bill is designed mainly to benefit Bolsonaro and protect powerful figures from facing the full consequences of their actions. They warn that reducing his sentence could weaken Brazil’s fight to protect its democracy and send a dangerous message that political leaders can escape accountability.
The decision now moves to the Senate, where the debate is expected to be intense. Senators will have to decide whether to support the lower house and approve the bill or reject it and keep Bolsonaro’s current sentence in place.
This moment is important for Brazil. It is not only about one political leader but also about how the country handles justice, democracy, and the rule of law. The outcome will shape Brazil’s political future and may influence how citizens view their institutions for years to come.
As Brazil waits for the Senate’s decision, the world watches closely. The country continues to stand at a crossroads, balancing between political loyalty, democratic values, and the need for a justice system that treats everyone fairly.
