In a nail-biting finish, Brady Tkachuk emerged as the overtime hero, scoring the decisive goal just over two minutes into the extra session, granting the Ottawa Senators a dramatic 3-2 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Monday evening.
The crucial strike occurred after Tim Stützle, shining with three assists, located Tkachuk in an open lane and delivered a perfectly placed cross-ice pass, which was sent sailing past Jets goalie Connor Hellebuyck at Canada Life Centre.
Ottawa (15-13-1) also saw contributions from Nick Cousins and Jake Sanderson, while Linus Ullmark was solid in goal, making 23 saves. Winnipeg (15-15-2) countered with goals from defencemen Neal Pionk and Logan Stanley, while Hellebuyck recorded 28 saves in his second game back from injury.
Following a scoreless first period, the action heated up in the second. Cousins opened scoring with a quick wrist shot, only for Pionk to equalize with a powerful shot from the blue line. Stanley then gave the Jets a 2-1 lead with his sixth goal, marking a personal milestone.
The Senators battled back to force overtime late in the third, thanks to a fortunate deflection off Sanderson’s shot that found the back of the net. In overtime, Ottawa completed their comeback, dashing the Jets' hopes of rectifying their recent inconsistency.
Winnipeg will aim to rebound on Wednesday against the St. Louis Blues, while Ottawa gains momentum from this hard-fought road victory.
