Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, has announced his support for his eldest son, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, in the race for the 2026 presidential elections, as reported by sources within his political party. Valdemar Costa Neto, the leader of Bolsonaro’s right-wing Liberal Party, confirmed to Reuters that the senator had received the former president's endorsement for his candidacy.
This support was expressed during Bolsonaro's visit to the federal police headquarters in Brasilia, where he is currently incarcerated for coup-related charges. The announcement has triggered reactions in Brazil's financial markets, with the national currency dropping by approximately 2 percent against the U.S. dollar and the Bovespa stock index experiencing a 3 percent decline on Friday.
In prior speculation, investors had expected Bolsonaro to back a candidate with more market-oriented policies and executive experience, such as Sao Paulo Governor Tarcisio de Freitas, who previously served as a minister under him and could challenge leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. Analysts argue that Flavio is perceived as less experienced and potentially a weaker candidate, heightening concerns among investors.
Since June 2023, Bolsonaro has been barred from holding office due to sanctions imposed by Brazil’s federal electoral court for his actions during the last presidential election. In September, he received a sentence of over 27 years in prison for his involvement in coup plotting following his defeat to President Lula.
Bolsonaro's backing of Flavio highlights the former president's persistent influence within Brazil’s right-wing factions. While this endorsement is likely to galvanize Bolsonaro's committed supporters, it simultaneously creates uncertainty in the political and economic climate as the nation gears up for the 2026 elections. Analysts suggest this move could alter political alliances and voter sentiments, especially among conservative constituents who have closely observed the Bolsonaro family's political trajectory.
The development spotlights Flavio Bolsonaro’s upcoming campaign strategy, his efforts to connect with both his father's supporters and a larger national audience, as well as the obstacles he may face against President Lula. The choice of a former president to advocate for a family member in such a prominent political position continues to draw international attention, reflecting Brazil’s intricate political landscape and the implications of political legacies on forthcoming elections.
