In a dramatic twist during New Zealand's second Test against the West Indies, fast bowler Blair Tickner faced a serious shoulder injury on Wednesday. Just as he wrapped up an exceptional spell, diving to thwart a boundary, he collapsed, gripping his left shoulder. Concerned players from both teams looked on as medical personnel quickly attended to him. Subsequently, he was carried off on a stretcher and taken to a hospital in Wellington, where New Zealand Cricket confirmed the nature of his left shoulder injury.
Before this incident, Tickner had been in stellar form, achieving a remarkable spell of 4-32 in 16 overs. New Zealand struggled initially, going over an hour without a breakthrough, with the West Indies comfortably at 66/0 after skipper Tom Latham opted to field first. Tickner changed the game's momentum by dismissing two batsmen in quick succession, showcasing precise and relentless bowling that put New Zealand ahead.
Although the West Indies managed to stabilize somewhat, reaching 175/4 by tea, they suffered a dramatic collapse, losing six wickets for merely 30 runs. Debutant Michael Rae contributed by taking 3 wickets for 67 runs, while Shai Hope emerged as the West Indies' top scorer with 48 runs. Interestingly, Tickner's outstanding performance initially gave New Zealand a solid advantage, but the injury cast a shadow over his remarkable display.
Prior to this match, both squads had made multiple changes due to injuries, with the first Test ending in a draw. Fans are now anxious about the availability of Tickner for the final Test, which is slated for December 18 in Mount Maunganui. This shoulder injury has become a significant topic of discussion as New Zealand strives to maintain their momentum and achieve a series victory.
