At 70, Bill Gates appears vigorous and active. The Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist says his upkeep is less about strict gym regimens or diets and more about pickleball, a racket sport he has enjoyed for over 50 years.
Pickleball blends elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It is simple to learn, gentle on the joints and accessible to players across age groups. Gates first tried the game as a teenager, and continues to use it as a practical way to keep fit and socialise.
A lifelong commitment to the game
In a 2022 blog post, Gates described himself as having been a “pickler” for more than half a century. Once a niche pastime, pickleball has expanded rapidly — the United States now counts roughly 4.8 million participants, with player numbers up nearly 40% over two years.
Gates points out that pickleball’s accessibility is a major reason for its appeal. He notes it takes only minutes to pick up the basics, the ball travels more slowly than in tennis making rallies easier, and matches are typically short and enjoyable.
Why the sport endures
For Gates, the sport’s chief benefit is social connection. He values playing with friends and family, and typically finds time for a session at least once a week, more often during warmer months.
Unlike high-impact athletics that demand lengthy training, pickleball is brisk, social and adaptable. All that is needed is a paddle, a ball and a net; courts can be indoors, outdoors, compact or even improvised in a backyard.
The health advantages
Medical experts highlight pickleball as beneficial for both physical and cognitive health. A 2023 Cleveland Clinic report lists several advantages associated with regular play:
Improve heart health – It promotes cardiovascular endurance and helps manage blood pressure.
Strengthen muscles and bones – Repeated movement contributes to stronger limbs and joints.
Enhance balance and coordination – Quick, light footwork supports stability and motor control.
Boost brain health – Tactical play and split-second decisions help maintain mental sharpness.
Physicians often recommend pickleball for older adults because it is less taxing on joints than many alternatives. They also advise players to warm up, stay hydrated and wear supportive footwear to reduce injury risk.
From parks to celebrity courts
Pickleball’s growth has reached celebrity circles, with names such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Aamir Khan, Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt among those seen on courts. For figures in tech like Gates, the sport provides both physical benefit and psychological relief after demanding workdays.
Simple habits, lasting results
Gates’ experience underscores that sustainable fitness can come from an enjoyable, consistent activity rather than exhaustive routines. He stresses that regular participation and genuine enjoyment are central to maintaining health and well-being.
